Resolution in support of the humanitarian release of Ramsey Muņiz
2013 Texas LULAC Resolution
Introduced by:    LULAC District 7, Austin, TX

WHEREAS, Ramiro “Ramsey” Muņiz, a great civil rights leader of the Chicano Movimiento, who advocated for freedom and equality for all Mexican Americans and Latinos throughout America; and

Whereas, Ramsey Muņiz   represented the best and the brightest advocates for the poor and underrepresented Latinos in Texas and became a Texas gubernatorial candidate in 1972 and 1974 for La Raza Unida Party; and

WHEREAS, Through his work as a community volunteer, Ramsey Muņiz brought significant social, educational, political and economic advancements for Mexican Americans, Hispanics, Latinos and other Americans throughout Texas, the Southwest, and nation; and

WHEREAS, Ramsey Muniz’s advocacy increased his vulnerability to prosecution  that ultimately resulted in his imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Which sentence constitutes cruel and unusual punishment for a such a worthy man, and  

Whereas, Ramsey Muniz has now spent 20 years of his life unjustly  imprisoned, far from his family and friends , where he has suffered greatly and continues to suffer to this day; and

WHEREAS, Ramsey Muņiz, is 70 years of age and poses no threat to his community. On the contrary his release would benefit the Latino Community; and

WHEREAS, the League of United Latin Americans Citizens (LULAC) acknowledges Ramsey Muniz’s civil rights works on behalf of  Latinos and Ramsey Muņiz and also recognizes that Presidential compassion is merited in this case.

Therefore Be It Resolved, that Texas LULAC supports the efforts of the National Committee to Free Ramsey Muņiz and requests that President Barack Obama grant Ramsey Muņiz an immediate Commutation of Sentence. Freedom for Ramsey Muņiz.

Resolution in Support of the Humanitarian Release of Ramsey Muņiz

WHEREAS, Ramiro "Ramsey" Muņiz, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, received a Juris Doctor Degree from Baylor School of Law; and

WHEREAS, Ramsey Muņiz, a leader during the Civil Rights Movement, fought for justice and equality for Mexican Americans, Chicanos, Hispanics, and Latinos; and

WHEREAS, Ramsey Muņiz was a Texas gubernatorial candidate in 1972 and 1974 for La Raza Unida Party, an independent political party; and

WHEREAS, Ramsey Muņiz gave Mexican Americans, Chicanos, Hispanics, and Latinos a voice in the political arena and his contributions are recognized and noted as part of Texas history; and

WHEREAS, key information was withheld in the Ramsey Muņiz trial and he was denied his constitutional rights granted by the 5th Amendment - Due Process of the Law, and the 14th Amendment - Equal Protection Under the Law; and

WHEREAS, Ramsey Muņiz is serving a sentence of life without parole, which constitutes cruel and unusual punishment; and

WHEREAS, Ramsey Muņiz, who is 68 years of age, and others who are wrongly incarcerated endure great suffering as well as their families; and

WHEREAS, LULAC is the oldest and largest Latino organization that supports civil rights for all citizens including those who are unjustly incarcerated; and

THEREFORE BE lT RESOLVED, that the League of United Latin American Citizens supports all efforts to free Ramsey Muņiz and requests the support of President BarackObama in granting him an immediate Commutation of Sentence.
